The Vision Behind Recoil TJ
Jordan's journey began with the purchase of his Jeep TJ back in 2017. Initially, it served as his gateway into off-road adventures in Florida. However, over time, Jordan realized the need for continuous improvement. After several smaller revisions, he committed to a complete frame-up rebuild to create a Jeep capable of performing on challenging terrains like Moab and beyond.
Key Features of the Rebuild
Suspension and Frame:
- Mobilt’s Frame Kits and Suspension: Jordan opted for Mobuilt’s front and back half kits along with their double triangulated four-link suspension. The switch to aluminum suspension links replaced early steel links that bent under pressure, improving durability.
- ORI Struts: Instead of traditional coilovers, Jordan experimented with ORI struts, which added stability and fine-tuning capabilities, particularly useful for off-camber scenarios.
Tires and Wheels:
- Mickey Thompson Baja Boss (40-inch): After extensive testing on various terrains, he stuck with these reliable tires.
- Dirty Life Wheels: Jordan selected the Mesa aluminum wheels, maintaining strength and style while adding beadlock capability for better off-road performance.
Performance Enhancements
-
Powertrain:
- Swapped in a 5.7 Hemi V8 engine sourced from a 2006 Ram, coupled with a GM 4L80 transmission.
- Custom adapters and modifications were made to ensure seamless performance and ease of use without relying on a computer.
- A MagnaFlow exhaust system completed the build, adding a powerful sound profile.
-
Axles:
- East Coast Gear Supply's 14-bolt axles with 40-spline shafts and high-strength knuckles provided enhanced durability.
- Yukon Grizzly lockers ensured reliable traction for both front and rear.
Functional and Visual Additions
- Cooling System: Mishimoto’s aluminum radiator and transmission coolers kept the engine running smoothly even during demanding conditions.
- Interior Setup: Jordan installed PRP seats and harnesses for comfort and safety. He added storage solutions from Mobuilt, including a modular cargo rack with Milwaukee Packout mounts.
- Custom Cage and Dash: The roll cage and dash were built for functionality, including space-saving design choices like low-mounted seats to accommodate his 6’2” height.
- Motobilt Fenders and Armor: Jordans build is loaded with Motobilt goodies.

The Finishing Touch
Jordan opted for Steel-It coatings on the Jeep’s tub and accessories, citing their superior durability over traditional paint or powder coatings. With its sleek two-tone finish in gray and black, the Recoil TJ not only performs well but also stands out visually at events like the Great American Crawl.
Future Plans
Jordan’s journey with Recoil TJ is far from over. He plans to continue tweaking the suspension and gear ratios for optimal performance across various terrains. He emphasizes how building the Jeep has been an educational and fulfilling process, proving that with determination, anyone can bring a dream project to life.
